Toddler Drowns In Unprotected Well During Mother’s Church Service

An 18-month-old toddler tragically drowned in an open well in Tafara while the mother was at a church service.

Authorities, led by National police spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, have initiated investigations into the heartbreaking incident.

“The ZRP is investigating a sad incident which occurred at a church on March 30, 2024, in which an 18-month-old infant drowned in an uncovered well while the victim’s mother was attending a church service in Tafara, Harare.

“Parents are urged to consider and put their children’s safety first,” he said.

Authorities in Bulawayo are currently probing two separate incidents, a fatal road traffic accident and a murder case, both occurring on March 30, 2024.

The first incident took place along Percy Iboston Road in Cowdray Park, where an unidentified man, estimated to be around 55 years old, was struck by a Honda Fit vehicle. The collision resulted in severe head injuries for the victim, who was clad in navy-blue trousers, a grey jacket, a grey shirt, and brown shoes. Tragically, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene of the accident.

Concurrently, in an unrelated event in Pumula South, police are investigating a murder that occurred at a local sports bar around 8:40 pm. The victim, identified as Notho Sibanda aged 38, lost his life after an altercation with a suspect known only as Sibho and three other unidentified accomplices. During the altercation, Sibho and his associates stabbed Sibanda with a sharp object, resulting in fatal wounds to his thigh and back.

The sequence of events unfolded when the victim intervened to prevent the suspects from assaulting another patron during a drinking session at the sports bar.

Law enforcement authorities are actively pursuing leads and gathering evidence to bring clarity and justice to both cases. The incidents have left the community shocked and mourning the loss of lives in these unfortunate events.
