Police Officer Farai Muchandisiye Fined US$200 For Culpable Homicide

A magistrate fined 37-year-old Farai Muchandisiye of the Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) US$200 after finding him guilty of culpable homicide.

Muchandisiye was charged with both culpable homicide and neglecting to report an accident to the police when he appeared before a Norton magistrate. In addition, he was found guilty on the second offence and given a $100 fine.

Tanaka Danhire (20) was struck by Muchandisiye’s Toyota Wish on February 19, 2024, about 8 PM, when he was crossing the road on the Harare-Bulawayo route, according to the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA).

Farai Muchandisiye neglected to notify the police about the accident even though he transported the victim to the hospital, where he eventually passed away from his wounds.

Muchandisiye entered a guilty plea and was given a sentence of $200 in fines or two months in jail for culpable homicide and an additional $100 in fines or one month in jail for neglecting to notify the accident.

According to Section 49 of the Criminal Law (Codification and Reform) Act, culpable homicide is the illegal killing of another person as a result of carelessness or recklessness. The provision stipulates that the offence carries a fine up to or surpassing level fourteen, life imprisonment or a lesser sentence, or both.
