Over 15 000 people are expected to be part of the annual Anglican Church Bernard Mizeki pilgrimage this week in Marondera.
The pilgrims from around Zimbabwe, the southern African region and the world at large, are expected to attend the event that commemorates the life of the martyr who died in 1896.
The commemorations will be held from June 14 to 16.
Mizeki was an African Christian missionary and martyr.
Roads leading to the venue, 15 kilometres from Marondera central business district, have been rehabilitated by the church. Traffic volume is expected to increase in Marondera with Anglicans eager not to miss the first day of the commemorations, which are expected to end on Sunday, making their way to the shrine.
Anglican Council of Zimbabwe (ACZ) chairperson and Anglican Diocese of Manicaland Bishop Eric Ruwona yesterday said they were ready for the commemorations.
“We are continuing with preparations to host this year’s commemorations of the Bernard Mizeki pilgrimage as usual. We are expecting over 15 000 church members from across the country, southern African region and other countries around the world,” he said.
“I have been to the shrine several times monitoring the preparations but I want to say we are ready for commemorations and we continue to pray for continual peace in the country.”
Anglican Diocese of Manicaland secretary Father Edmund Samutereko said he was happy with the preparations.
“I am happy with the preparations, the pilgrimage also brings business to our church members as during our break sessions they will sell various things from food, airtime and other things,” he said.
ACZ consists of six dioceses in the country.
