THE Primary and Secondary Education ministry has attributed the decline in the quality of Ordinary and Advanced Level results to the demographics of external candidates that mainly sit for June examinations.
The Zimbabwe School Examinations Council (Zimsec) released the results on Tuesday this week, indicating a 44,22% and 53% decrease in the A Level and O Level pass rates, respectively.
Speaking to NewsDay, Primary and Secondary Education ministry spokesperson Taungana Ndoro said the lower pass rate in the June examinations could be attributed to several factors which include the demographics of external candidates that mainly sit for June examinations.
“June examinations typically include a higher proportion of external candidates and repeat students,” he said.
Addressing journalists after the release of the results, Zimsec board chairperson Paul Mapfumo said the total number of candidates who registered for the June 2024 A Level examination was 144, with 125 private candidates.
He said only 19 were school candidates.
According to Ndoro, private candidates often face additional challenges such as balancing studies with other commitments or overcoming previous academic difficulties.
He, however, indicated that the ministry was committed to ensuring that all learners, including external candidates and repeat students, have an equal chance to succeed.
“We provide several support mechanisms, including access to study materials, tutoring and mentoring and flexible learning options for those who cannot attend regular classes,” Ndoro said.
Meanwhile, schools will close today and the ministry has announced that holiday lessons for November examination classes will commence tomorrow.
Ndoro said the holiday lessons would ensure that candidates are prepared for examinations.
“During these holiday lessons, we will provide qualified instructors and experienced teachers will conduct the lessons to ensure high-quality instruction,” he said.
Ndoro said they would ensure candidates receive additional study guides and practice examinations and focused revision sessions.
“Psychological and academic counselling will be available to address any student concerns,” he said.
The Primary and Secondary Education ministry recently amended dates for the examination class holiday lessons, moving them forward to August 9 to 22 from August 19 to 30.
